The ORF editorial board reacted with very sharp criticism to the allegations of the ÖVP against the “summer talks” moderator
Tarek Leitner
The ORF “Summer Talks” will be concluded on Monday and there has seldom been so much displeasure before an interview. The ÖVP holds a moderator
Tarek Leitner
to have taken a leave of absence with SPÖ leader Christian Kern himself during his time as chancellor. This is of course denied by all those involved, which now brings ÖVP mandate Efgani Dönmez into the field of fire.
Dönmez, who had switched from the Greens to the list of the People’s Party, had dug a joint Ibiza holiday between Leitner and Kern on Saturday, which, of course, had long been known. According to the ORF presenter, several families were on vacation together in 2015 because his daughter was friends with the one of the then ÖBB boss Kern.

Now, however, Dönmez followed up in the Sunday media and claimed in “Kurier” and “Austria” that the two were on vacation together in Morocco in autumn 2016, at a time when Kern was already SPÖ chairman and head of government. Of course, this is denied by all those involved.
“Conscious and intentional muddling”
The ORF editorial board sees no reason to doubt Leitner’s information and reacts indignantly to Dönmez’s claims. The committee recognizes “a conscious and deliberate muddling with the purpose of intimidating an ORF journalist before an important interview”. Dönmez deliberately damages the journalistic credibility of the ORF employee. Leitner has been proving for many years in his role as ORF moderator that he is politically independent and objective.

The approach of the ÖVP newcomer is also causing displeasure at NEOS. Secretary General Nikola Donig already sees a “Dönmez Gate”. He asked the ÖVP to either immediately disclose the evidence or source of the allegations “or to draw the conclusions from the fifth Dönmez in the list”.free essay websites
Unsurprisingly, the SPÖ was also shocked. Now the ÖVP is already inventing vacations to spoil the SPÖ and Federal Chancellor Kern, said SPÖ Federal Managing Director Georg Niedermühlbichler. He wondered if it was the new style of the ÖVP to spread defamation and untruths and then to remain silent. He was referring to the assertion by party leader Sebastian Kurz that the industrialist Hans-Peter Haselsteiner supported the SPÖ with 100,000 euros.
In the latter case, the SPÖ even sued Kurz, since he has neither proven nor denied the allegations made in the “summer talk” since then. The legal steps are of course not so well received by the whole party. Vienna’s Mayor Michael Häupl (SPÖ) said on Sunday in the “Krone”: “That has to be carried out politically. I don’t think much of such complaints.”
Dönmez makes it clear – but remains with criticism
Dönmez sticks to his stance, as he explained to the APA, and for his part rejects the criticism of his approach. He also does not want to question Leitner’s integrity. “SPÖ managing director Niedermühlbichler confirmed in the ‘press’ today that the Leitner and Kern families had a family vacation in Morocco. Only Christian Kern himself did not take part,” said Dönmez.
“I would like to emphasize again: It is completely okay if the families of Christian Kern and Tarek Leitner are friends and have been on vacation together, no matter when and where. Whether the families were together in Ibiza in San José in 2015, whether they were only again in 2016 without Tarek Leitner, or in Morocco in autumn without Christian Kern or anywhere else. And it is also not decisive how long they have known each other and whether their children go to school together. That is irrelevant because you You can never accuse anyone of a friendship or a holiday together. In addition, you never know whether someone will take on a political task at some point or not. Nobody can accuse someone else of that. I already explicitly emphasized that in my first statement. Besides, I’m not okay about questioning the journalistic integrity of Mr. Leitner, as some are now trying desperately to portray. “
»” I’m not interested in questioning Mr. Leitner’s journalistic integrity “«
His accusation was different, explained Dönmez, who had switched from the Greens to the ÖVP and was nominated by ÖVP boss Sebastian Kurz for the National Council election in fifth place on the federal list, “namely only that Tarek Leitner in the election campaign despite his now confessed Proximity to Kern moderates the TV duels. It is and remains a wrong decision by the ORF. A public service broadcaster must guarantee objectivity and must not allow the TV reporting to even spark the impression of a lack of objectivity. Generally not , but especially not in an election campaign. ” According to Dönmez, this mistake not only harms the political dispute, but also the ORF itself.
Conflict also preoccupies ORF bodies
The conflict over the moderation of the “summer talks” and the TV duels should also occupy the ORF committees next week. Thomas Zach, head of the ÖVP “Circle of Friends” in the ORF Board of Trustees, demands from ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz a catalog of measures for ORF objectivity in the election campaign. Wrabetz has been responsible for informing the station himself since the beginning of the year.
“It is not enough to take responsibility only on paper. Now the director general as head of information at ORF is called upon to fix the list that he has generated,” said Zach in a statement to the APA. “Next week, the General Director must explain clearly to the Board of Trustees how he intends to ensure fairness and objectivity for the rest of the election campaign.” Zach explained that even the appearance of a lack of equidistance was a problem for public broadcasters.
FPÖ General Secretary Herbert Kickl also sees ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetez as having a massive need for action. The “concern of bias” should have let it act long ago. Of course, Kickl added right away that he didn’t want to know which ORF grandees with which ÖVP grandees in the vicinity of (lobbyist and hunting organizer Alfons) Mensdorff-Pouilly had already gone to Halali: “In ORF, red-black wash themselves Hands each other. “

Why did Mr Dönmez join the ÖVP? They are probably more versed in such practices than the Greens. People who are friends have to make an application whether that is okay with some or not. That fits exactly, you know what to expect from such a party, namely not good. You should also sweep your own door before hacking at someone else.

Let’s be clear: Kurz said that he had no ambitions for the Chancellery, only that we have the “Ballhausplatz Project”, in writing. Kurz said again that he had no ambitions, but Mitterlehner said he had already known about the change of chairman. Kurz says the Reds got 100,000 from Haselsteiner, but Haselsteiner says njet, the Reds say njet and Kurz is silent. For this, they are now targeting Leitner, who Kurz looked bad at, not because Leitner did something, but because Kurz did not do something, namely to answer. And then you set up the next chimera and assume that Leitner prefers Kern, in a conversation that has not even been held. And he went on vacation, with Kern, because the children are friends, but because that’s not enough, you invent holidays to go with it, good Mr. Dönmez, it’s a mess anyway, isn’t it. But they don’t postulate that they don’t just mess with their political opponents, but also with an industrialist and a journalist. Collateral damage to the Messiah, but lies have short legs, and one more thing. I’m not a journalist, but if my job were daily political comments and news, I would now look at the way in which a shitstorm is sparked against a colleague and then, regardless of whether I appreciate him or not, I would bite hard because I at some point it could be a turn.
